The Australian government has lifted tennis superstar Novak Djokovic’s visa ban which now paves the way for the Serbian to take part in the Australian Open.
Djokovic was arrested in January for his refusal to be vaccinated against COVID-19 and was deported 10 days later even after mounting a successful legal challenge.
Djokovic arrived in Australia in January, when Covid cases were at their peak and government rules required anyone entering the country to be vaccinated unless they had a valid medication exemption.
He did not meet the requirements for entry, and the Australian government had his visa canceled and banned him from entering the country for three years.
The owner of Tennis Australia, Craig Tiley, had expressed on Tuesday the optimism that Djokovic would play in the Open next year.
“I know that Novak wants to come and play and return to the competition,”.
“He loves Australia and that’s where he’s had the best success.” He noticed
Earlier this year, Djokovic said he flew to Australia believing he had obtained the necessary medical exemptions.
