Professor Isa Pantami, the Minister of Communication and Digital Economy, says that the government should pay more attention to the revival of technology because it holds the key to the manly development of the country.
Represented by Professor Mohammed Bello, the Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of Galaxy Backbone, Pantami made the observation at the second annual general meeting of the Relevant Technology Alumni Association, RETOSA, in Jos.
He explained that functional relevant technological education would have an impact on the necessary skills on people, adding that professional training will address unemployment in the country.
“Technology remains the path to sustainable development; it is the way for the digital transformation of people in society.
“Relevant technology mixed with Internet Information and Communication Technology (ICT) will lift many out of poverty in Nigeria.
“Technology holds the key to sustainable development because it has the potential to completely transform our society,” he said.
Professor Mohammad Haruna, the Executive Vice President and Chief Executive of the National Agency for Science and Engineering Infrastructure (NASENI), attributed the collapse to the lack of professionals in the construction industry and other critical sectors of relevant technological education.
“The deterioration of relevant technology is the reason we have an incompetent workforce in our building and construction sector, industries and even ministries responsible for service delivery,” he said.
Professor Emmanuel Garba of the University of Jos, who spoke on the theme, “Reposition Centers Relevant Technology for Sustainable Economic Development: The Role of Stakeholders”‘, said there was need for government to revive education relevant technology.
The don noted that a functional relevant technology will ensure the development of skills that, in turn, will accelerate growth and development in society.
Governor Simon Lalong of Plateau argued that the state government has put modalities on the ground to improve relevant technological education in the state, adding that it had approved the recruitment of more teachers for centers across the state.
The governor, represented by Benjamin Jang, the Commissioner for Science and Technology in the state, said he has set up a board that will promote relevant technology in the state.
Lalong added that the government had mandated agencies, ministries and departments, including contractors, to panatronize the centers by purchasing their products to make them self-sufficient.
Similarly, Governor Abdullahi Sule of Nasarawa State, represented by Alhaji Abdul-Hakeem Bala, Permanent Secretary, Political Affairs in the office of the Secretary to the State Government, said his government had done a lot in as for skill development.
“We have a functional incubation center, a skill acquisition center and we have not only renovated our technical colleges but also equipped them with modern facilities.
“We have taken these steps because we believe in skills development as a tool for national growth,” he said.
In a message of goodwill, the Gbong Gwom Jos, Da Gyang Buba, said that a functional relevant technology reduces poverty and insecurity because when young people have skills, they will take their mind away from crime.
He promised that the traditional institution would support everything that the government would do to advance the course of professional education in the country.
Caleb Yiljura, the national president of RETOSA, said that the theme for its 2022 convention “Repositioning of Relevant Technology for Sustainable Economic Development”, aimed to reflect on the values that the sector plays to address the challenges that it faces today the nation.
He said that the relevant technology could offer better contributions to address unemployment and economic development if properly exploited.
Stakeholders at the event noted that relevant technological education is key to the growth and development of the nation’s economy which the government should take seriously.
