There is no limit to the number of affordable TVs you can buy in Kenya. This is because the market has matured, and unknown brands have found their way to the local market. You see, these brands don’t have their price sets as high as others, because they don’t have such a big name to keep up with the sales metrics.
However, that doesn’t mean they make less than stellar TV. We are going to mention a number of them, some of them have sold a lot locally, with very good feedback and customer satisfaction, but that is a story for another day.
Now, this is the perfect sign to talk about TCL, which has revealed that it will be bringing Mini LED, QLED, and home appliances to the Kenyan market. This is a move we should all welcome because it means that competition is about to increase, and we will be able to access some of these devices at a good price.
What is Mini LED TV?
Mini LED technology hasn’t been around for long, but it’s still very impressive because brands like Apple and others pack it into their devices like iPads and MacBook Pros. Also, it is worth noting that unless you have an OLED set, plasma TVs from many years ago, or these days and the price of MicroLED TVs, then you probably have an LED TV. You have to remember that LCD and LED TVs work the same way. LCD panels need a backlight, and LEDs are used to illuminate the LCD screen.
In this case, Mini LED simply means that it is a type of backlight used for televisions. They are smaller than conventional LEDs, up to 75 percent smaller than traditional LEDs. This means that smaller LEDs can be used in larger numbers to fit into the backlight range. If you understand how TVs work, then you know that the more backlit areas, the better the image reproduction because the TV now has the ability to control what is and what is not lit on the display.
Now, since thousands of Mini LEDs can fit into the screen, the display tends to be brighter with improved contrast. Mini LEDs are then controlled to brighten or dim small areas of the image, and this can be done with great precision in ape OLED panels.
We’ve found that the technology is becoming mainstream, which means we’ll be seeing more TVs rocking these panels. They also tend to be cheaper than OLED screens, which cost more to make.
TCL Models
Now, with that out of the way, we must note that TCL sells its products in 160 countries around the world.
In 2021, TCL TV market share grew by 11.5 percent with 24.6 million units of LCD TV shipments, while the No.1 Android OS Smart TV Brand, according to Omdia TV sets the tracker for market for Q1 2022 and Omdia TV design and tracking features respectively.
The models that will make their way here are the TCL Mini LED 4K TV C935 and C835.
The QLED 4K entertainment centers, model numbers C735 and C635, are now available in Kenya.
TCL also announced the latest home appliances, such as the Fresh-IN air conditioner and its new range of smart IoT devices that can be controlled remotely and intelligently via the TCL Home App.
“We are proud to unveil TCL’s latest generation of Mini LED and QLED C Series TVs, providing a home theater experience for Kenyan consumers,” said Jitendra Kulkani, TCL’s Marketing Director for the Middle East and Africa.
Pricing details are yet to be revealed, but expect it to cost from KES 100K or thereabouts.
