Addressing the people, Deputy Commissioner R. Snehal said that every person above the age of two years should compulsorily use the pills to prevent lymphatic filariasis, also known as elephantiasis, and help keep the district free from the disease.

He was addressing the gathering at Don Bosco School in Yadgir on Monday after giving pills to school students during a mass drug management (MDA) programme.

The program was organized in collaboration with the District Administration, Zilla Panchayat and District Health and Family Welfare Department.

“The disease is caused by infection with parasites classified as nematodes (roundworms) in the family Filarioidea The disease is transmitted through the bite of mosquitoes. The main symptom of an elephantiasis is an enlarged and swollen part of the body due to fluid accumulation. Hands and feet are the most commonly affected areas. “An entire hand or foot can swell up to several times its normal size, similar to the thick, rounded appearance of an elephant’s foot,” he said.

The Deputy Commissioner further said that there is no cure for these conditions. Therefore, all people, except those prohibited by health reasons, should use the pill as a preventive measure.

According to Ms. Snehal, the Health Department has made arrangements to provide tablets to every family.
