Since last year, Google has been putting a lot of effort into optimizing Android for tablets. This includes optimizing many first-party Google apps for use on larger displays. It continues to deliver much-needed tablet optimization for multiple desktop applications.
This is no surprise to people who work with Google. During this year’s Google I/O, the company announced that it will optimize more than 20 Google apps to work better on tablets. This only complements the optimizations available in Android 12L and Android 13.
Google has been rolling out optimizations for its apps so far, and there are more to come. We expect most of the apps to be optimized before the Google Pixel tablet launches next year.
Several other workspace applications now have tablet optimization
For starters, some Workspace applications are getting drag-and-drop functionality. This includes Google Slides. This means you can simply drag content from one app to Slides when two apps are open side-by-side. This makes importing media faster because it eliminates having to browse your media folder to find the image you want.
The other app must be compatible with drag and drop, of course. If you want to use other Workspace apps, bet most of them support this feature.
Also, the Google Docs app now has full mouse support. You can use a mouse with the Google Docs app before, but it’s much more intuitive and closer to how it reacts on a computer. For example, when you want to select text, you can simply click and drag to select the text. Instead of scrolling through this document.
These changes, along with others, helped reinforce the notion that Google wants to improve Android for tablets. These features are currently being rolled out, but may not be available on your device yet. If you’re excited about these features, make sure your apps are fully updated. If you still don’t see them, they may want to wait a few days.
