Millions appear to have done so, with new data showing that “Scotland” has surpassed 20 million Instagram hashtags for photos and video sharing social networking service Instagram.

The milestone comes just weeks after National Geographic, the world’s most popular social media app with 246 million followers, named the Scottish Highlands as one of its 25 most amazing places. of the world to experience in 2023.

VisitScotland, the national tourism organization for Scotland, is enjoying what they say is a “huge” presence on Instagram.

When the world’s first “Instagram travel center” launched in 2017, allowing visitors to design a holiday to Scotland based on other people’s Instagram photos, the VisitScotland Instagram account took over. of tourism organizations in Europe on the platform, more than 1.5. million fans.

Added to that, their own VisitScotland hashtag they created has been used over 4.2 million times on Instagram, more hashtags than any Scottish landmark to date.

In response to news that “Scotland” has surpassed 20 million hashtags on Instagram, Lesley McIvor, VisitScotland Senior Social Media and Influencer Manager, told the Herald: “Social media has become a very important tool for marketing Scotland as a tourist destination.

“Instagram is a platform where VisitScotland has a big presence – our account is the tourism organization in Europe that has a following of 1.5 million followers. The social media group often uses the popular hashtag Scotland as benefit for us, as our own hashtag VisitScotland is gaining more and more visibility, having been used 4.2 million times.

“As with other channels, our Instagram account is primarily aimed at creating travel awareness and engagement programs for a global audience. The stunning scenery of Scotland is very valuable for visitors and Instagram is a great way to show the uniqueness of our country.

“Through engaging, visual content, we hope users will see Scotland as a great place to visit and encourage a global audience to consider Scotland.”

The total number of Scotland hashtags to date on Instagram is more than 9.5 million dedicated to Wales and 3.2 million dedicated to Northern Ireland.

However, Ireland and England were tagged more often than Scotland, with 23.3 million hashtags and 34.8 million hashtags on the social media platform.

For places in Scotland, “Edinburgh” streets ahead of the rest with 10.4 million dedicated Instagram hashtags, while “Glasgow” has 7.9 million dedicated hashtags to date.

In third place is “The Highlands” with 2.8 million points, ahead of “Aberdeen” with 1.8 million points, “Skye” with 1.4 million points and “Dundee2” with 1.1 million points.

Scotland’s Instagram icon comes after southern Scotland was named one of the world’s best places to visit by popular travel guide Lonely Planet last week.

In the Best Travel list for 2023, southern Scotland was named as one of the best educational destinations to visit, alongside Manchester, New Mexico, Dresden, El Salvador and Marseille.
