Samsung South Africa is bringing two new TV technologies to South Africa in the next few months. First up is QD-OLED, followed by new MicroLED screens that will overwhelm and overwhelm all but the most well-equipped wallets.
They were both a little late to the party but that didn’t mean we weren’t expecting them. At least, the invitation has been open since both were announced.
QD-OLED – Quantumania
Samsung has taken the wraps on a new screen technology called QD-OLED at the end of 2021. Combining quantum dot technology with traditional OLED, the company hoped to emphasize the best of both worlds while minimizing the downsides. A bright OLED screen or a quality LED with better black reproduction is the holy grail of a TV. QD-LED is close.
But that was the hard part. From the beginning Samsung said it would not bring the technology to our shores but that has changed. Come Q1 2023, it won’t be Sony’s moving QD-OLED technology for Samsung. The Korean brand will use it as well. As for prices… that’s something that will come closer in time.
MicroLED – Paying the price
Also on the cards are Samsung’s new MicroLED TVs. Chances are you’re familiar with the technology, even if you’re not completely familiar with it. The company’s technology has previously been used to create its large, made-to-order, wall-sized sets. Well, soon you will be able to buy one. Without the shell without the engineer and the new structure to be installed.
But that doesn’t mean any of these TVs will be cheap. Samsung was very upfront about the potential cost of these screens. Part of this is that the company will focus on the 101in and larger size in this country. There are five sizes – 76in, 89in, 101in, 114in, and 120in. In South Africa, all MicroLED sets will have three-digit sizes and very large price tags.
Some users may find the price worth paying. Samsung says its uber-premium sets won’t burn in, will integrate speakers everywhere, and will support multiview. This is where all HDMI inputs can display on the screen at once. Try and imagine four players sharing one screen in four different games. That… should happen. But only later in 2023. As with QD-OLED, pricing and details will be released shortly.
