Alert Ready, Canada’s national public warning system, is sending out a test warning across Canada, and Ontario will be hit this afternoon.
Ontario emergency organizations will issue a warning message about “televisions, radios, and LTE-compatible wireless devices,” according to the press release.
“Alert Ready is Canada’s national alerting system. Alert Ready delivers critical and potentially life-saving alerts to Canadians via television, radio and LTE-connected and compatible wireless devices.”
So if your daytime Netflix or TikTok scrolling on your phone is interrupted by a test alert, don’t panic because it’s happening everywhere.
Or at least in Ontario, Alberta, British Columbia, Manitoba, Nova Scotia, Quebec, and six other provinces and territories.
Although it is safe to assume that some people will not be amused by the warning considering the reaction to Amber Alerts in recent years.
This test is sent to inform the public about the system when there is a real emergency and to ensure that the system is working effectively.
The program was developed for all federal, provincial, and territorial governments and broadcasters, wireless service providers and Pelmorex, the weather network.
Ontario’s alert is set to go off at 12:55 PM EST, and you can’t opt out of receiving the message.
“Given the importance of warning Canadians about an imminent threat to the safety of life and property, Canadians have no option but to opt out of this vital life-saving service,” reads the news release.
Alert Ready has already sent more than 800 messages across Canada, and Canadians across the country will receive more today.
