‘Talks with the US will not solve anything’
The leader of Iran’s Islamic Revolution has rejected negotiations with the United States, saying talks with Washington will not bear fruit. Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei said Iran’s problems with America can only be solved by letting Washington hold the Iranians to account. The leader warned that in order to end the opposition, the US needs Iran to give up its nuclear program, change its constitution and limit its influence within its borders. Ayatollah Ali Khamenei added that no Iranian can accept such conditions. He made the comments in a speech to a group of members of the Basij in the capital Tehran. The Leader said that the Basij community must know well the greatest enemy of the country, which is the pride of the world. Ayatollah Khamenei added that the enemies are trying to spread lies and fake news and paint a dark picture of Iran. It is because the US wants to control the minds of the Iranian people. Ayatollah Khamenei referred to the victory of the Islamic revolution in Iran in 1979 and said that this revolution provided balance against the popularity of the arrogant Asian powers in West Asia, striking a heavy blow to their colonial policies. The leader added that the creation of an effective Israeli regime is consistent with those policies to maintain control over the region.
A US base in Syria is under attack
The US military says one of its bases in northeastern Syria has come under rocket attack, the third such attack in nine days. Two rockets reportedly targeted a checkpoint in Al-Shaddadi late Friday. We don’t know who fired the rockets, but we do know there were no injuries or damage to the base. Hundreds of American troops are still in Syria as part of what the US calls the fight against the remnants of the Daesh terrorist group. American troops in the region are supporting Kurdish fighters. Last week, rockets targeted the base of the green American village, located in Syria’s largest oil field, al-Omar. According to the US military, a Turkish drone strike this week killed two Kurdish fighters and posed a threat to US forces in northeastern Syria. Attacks on US military bases in the region, mainly in Iraq, have increased over the past few years as anti-American sentiment has risen.
Venezuelan political debates
Delegates of the Venezuelan government and the Mexican opposition to sign the agreement after months of informal meetings. The government delegation is led by Congress leader Jorge Rodriguez. The opposition party is led by politician Gerardo Blyde. The Norwegian talks are aimed at ending the conflict between the government of President Nicolas Maduro and the opposition. The deal could help ease US oil sanctions on Venezuela and expand Chevron’s massive oil operations there. The opposition party sees the talks as a way out of the political crisis long before the 2024 presidential election. The crisis gripped the South American country after the 2019 election, which Maduro won amid the election of US-backed opposition leader Juan Guaido. The US and its European allies have imposed a number of sanctions on Venezuela since then.
