  • Mufti Usmani had also said even if the group claims that one or two clauses of the constitution are not Islamic, it was not their mandate to make changes in it or to justify their actions to take against the state.
  • Talks between the TTP group and the Pakistani government had started in October 2021 but collapsed after two months in December. Talks resumed in May 2022 and two delegations from Pakistan went to Afghanistan where the TTP leader is hiding to have negotiations.
  • However, the talks broke down due to the TTP group’s demand for revoking the merger of the ancient tribal areas with Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.

What now? Terrorist attacks and the battle between the Pakistani army and TTP fighters are expected to intensify in the tribal areas of Pakistan.

  • For example, hours after the ceasefire ended, 10 Taliban fighters, including a TTP commander Tipu, were killed in Waziristan in northwestern Pakistan after fighting with the Pakistani army.
  • The security forces also suffered some casualties, but the exact number could not be confirmed.
  • In the coming days, the tenure of the new army chief Asim Munir will be tough as the battle rages with the TTP group. His predecessor General Qamar Javed Bajwa had a strong grudge against the TTP, and had facilitated many attacks on the group.
