Guwahati/Agartala: Has Tripura become the rape capital of Northeast India? Yes, almost all the opposition parties in Tripura believe that the North Eastern state has now become a capital of violence in the region under the BJP rule.

More than 407 incidents of violence have been registered in Tripura since January 2020. According to the state home department, out of 2,164 cases of crimes against women registered in the last 2.5 years in Tripura, 381 were cases of violence and 26 were gang violations.

At least seven cases of violation were reported during the last ten days of October, which caused massive outrage in the state.

The rape of a teenager in Unakoti district on October 19 has become a rallying point with opposition parties claiming that the son of Labor Minister Bhagaban Das was involved in the crime.

Expressing serious concern over the rising incidents of rape and other incidents of sexual atrocities against women, former minister Manik Sarkar said, “Crimes against women in Tripura are on the rise after the arrival of the BJP in power. It is a shame for the government.”

“The government should take some positive steps to curb such crimes against women. But I am sorry to say that the prime minister has not said anything about what is happening in the last few days. Also, the DGP is still keeping the mother. The real culprits involved in the rape cases have not been caught. The police have not taken action against the culprits because they have political support,” said the veteran CPI(M) leader. Northeast Now.

Taking a dig at the BJP government, Congress MLA Sudip Roy Barman said that Tripura has evolved as the rape capital of the country.

“If you go by the NCB report, in terms of crimes against women, Tripura is one of the leading states in the country. According to the data provided by the government on the floor of the house, about 13 cases of rape are they check in the state every month. In short, crimes against women are at their peak in Tripura,” Roy Barman told this news site.

The Congress leader also said that the government has given protection to the perpetrators involved in rape and gang rape.

Echoing similar sentiments, Trinamool Congress (TMC) MP Susmita Dev said, “It’s amazing the number of rapes happening in a seven-day period. It’s something that’s quite unprecedented in the state of North-East, which made Tripura a capital of violence”.

“What is even more worrying is that the names coming up, who are allegedly involved, are from the ruling party,” he added.

Pradyot Debbarman, president of the Indigenous Progressive Regional Alliance (TIPRA), said that there is a total failure of law and order in Tripura.

“Cases of rape are increasing in the state due to the total breakdown of law and order. The police feel that these criminals are protected by powerful authorities. The political-criminal nexus is the reason why the police do not take not enough or quick action against violators,” Debbarman told Northeast Now.
