Father James J. MessarosThe retired priest of the Diocese of Brooklyn died on November 15 at the age of 83.
He was born on March 18, 1939 in New Jersey and was ordained a priest on April 19, 1969.
Father Messaros has served in the Diocese of Brooklyn as pastor of St. Stanislaus Bishop and Martyr Church in Ozone Park, interim administrator of St. Mary’s Star Church in Far Rockaway, and parochial vicar of Most Precious Blood Church in Brooklyn. .
He attended Sacred Heart of Jesus Church in Bayside and St. Josaphat Residence in Bayside.
Msgr. Thomas Mashalski, pastor of Sacred Heart of Jesus Church, was a friend of Father Messaros for 25 years. The priest said that he was very devoted to the Blessed Mother. He recited the rosary not three or five times a day, but more than 10-12 times. He always had a rosary in his hand.’
Msgr. Mashalski also remembers that in every parish he served, Father Mezaros “always wanted his parishioners to give their best to God. And he always tried to give his best to God.”
Father Messaros’ funeral was held Nov. 18 at Sacred Heart of Jesus Church in Bayside.

Father Meszaros was buried privately in his native New Jersey.
Sister Grace Andrew CallahanA member of the Sisters of St. Joseph for 73 years, died Nov. 3 at age 91 at St. Joseph’s Convent in Brentwood.
Grace grew up at St. Francis de Sales Parish in Belle Harbor.
She attended Stella Maris High School and after graduation entered the Sisters of St. Joseph in 1949.
Sister Grace always greeted everyone she met with a warm smile; This is especially true of the children she teaches at the elementary level at Our Lady of Sorrows in Corona, St. James in Brooklyn, St. Teresa of Avila in South Ozone Park, and Holy Name of Mary in Valley Stream. He later taught reading at the Brentwood Education Center.
For 49 years, Sister Grace faithfully assisted St. Joseph’s Convent in Brentwood in various administrative capacities.
He lived his life with devotion, joy and grace.
Known for her great devotion to the rosary, Grace was a faithful ambassador to her God, whose life was devoted to bringing others to a deeper faith.
Father Sean Gunn celebrated a Mass of Christian Burial for Sister Grace on Nov. 10 at Sacred Heart Chapel in Brentwood.
Burial was in Calvary Cemetery, Brentwood.
Sister Margaret Mary Altisar, OP (Sister Thomas Miriam) died on 7 November aged 94. She was a Sister of St. Dominic for 76 years.
Margaret was born on February 19, 1928. Altisar’s family lived in St. Catherine of Genoa Parish, Brooklyn. After finishing elementary school, Margaret attended Bishop McDonnell High School.
On September 8, 1946, Margaret entered the novitiate of the Sisters of St. Dominic in Amityville with a group of eager young women. The investiture date was August 8, 1947, and Margaret dressed in the Dominican habit and took her religious name Thomas Miriam.
After taking her first vows on August 7, 1948, Sister Thomas Miriam was assigned to the Fourteen Holy Martyrs in Brooklyn. After 11 years in primary education, she taught at secondary level at St Barbara’s and St Albert’s secondary schools, as well as St Joseph’s Mountain School and then at Molloy College. Sister Margaret earned a Bachelor of Arts from St. John’s University in Jamaica, New York, a Master of Arts from St. Bonaventure University in New York, and a Counseling Certificate from the Mental Health Center in New York City. In the 1970s, Sister Margaret became involved as an executive board member with an emphasis on sisterhood studies and ministry.
In 1995, Sister Margaret served at St. Martin-Tour Parish in Amityville. The outreach program benefited from proceeds from The Cloak Room, where items are tastefully displayed. After serving the people of Amityville for 12 years, Margaret moved east to Wyandch where she volunteered as an English to Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) teacher and counselor for women participating in the Opening Word program. Students from various countries of Central and South America, as well as China, Turkey and Spain came to participate in the program.
Sisters who lived with Margaret described her as generous and hardworking. A friend described Margaret as “short but a giant among us.”
A Mass of Christian Burial was held for Sister Margaret Altisar on November 15, 2022 at St. Albert’s Chapel.
