Father Richard LevkiewiczKnown as “Father Luke,” a parish priest known for his devotion to church ministry and community vocations, died on November 2nd at the age of 79.
A graduate of Cathedral College in Brooklyn and a graduate of Immaculate Conception Seminary, Father Lewkiewicz earned a BA in philosophy and a BS in theology. He was ordained to the priesthood on June 1, 1968, by Bishop Francis J. Mugavero at the Cathedral Basilica of St. James in downtown Brooklyn.
Father Levkiewicz generously served as parish vicar of Blessed Sacrament Church in Brooklyn (1968-1979); St. Camille, Rockaway Park (1979-1988); Good Shepherd, Marine Park (1988-98); and Our Lady of the Angels, Bay Ridge (1998-2017).
He also served as coordinator of the Christian Initiative of Adults (RCIA), a process through which unbaptized men and women enter the Catholic Church. In retirement, Father Levkiewicz resided at the Bishop Mugavero Residence for senior priests at the Immaculate Conception Center in Douglaston.
Msgr. Kevin Nunn, who served nine years with Levkiewicz at Our Lady’s Angels, remembers that “he didn’t want to be a pastor and he didn’t want any part of the administration. His only ambition was to become a parish priest.”
“Having Bible discussion groups with small groups of 10-15 parishioners was very satisfying for him,” he added.
Father Lewkiewicz’s funeral was celebrated Nov. 10 at the Immaculate Conception Center in Douglaston with Bishop Brennan and Msgr. No one is a homilist. Interment was in Calvary Cemetery, Woodside.
Sister Paulette Claire Lebel, OP, (Sister Mary Pierre) died on November 5 at the age of 91. She served as a Sister of St. Dominic for 63 years. He grew up with his twin brothers, Joseph and Louis, in New Hyde Park, New York, where the family attended Holy Spirit Church.
After graduating from high school, Paulette worked in business for several years.
At the age of 28, on September 6, 1959, Paulette entered the Novitiate in Amityville.
On August 5, 1960, she dressed in the Dominican habit and assumed her religious name of Sister Mary Pierre. He was sworn in on August 6, 1961.
Sister Pauletta received a bachelor’s degree in accounting.
During her first 13 years of ministry, she taught elementary school at Our Lady of Perpetual Help, Lindenhurst, New York; St. Aloysius, Brooklyn; and St. Joseph, Long Island City.
In 1974, following a change in ministry, he received his New York State radiology license.
For the next 30 years, he served as a radiologist at Mary Immaculate Hospital in Jamaica, New York, and lived at Mary Immaculate Convent. After her retirement in 2004, Sister Paulette volunteered as a driver for the Sisters at Queen of the Rosary Mothers.
His ministry in later years was the Intercessory Prayer. During these years he lived in the community at the Cabrini Residence in Amityville.
Because of her failing health, Sister Pauletta lived in Carlin Hall, Mother Rosary’s home.
Sister Pauletta’s funeral was held on November 8 at St. Albert’s Chapel. A Christian burial was held at the Sisters’ Cemetery.
Father Michael O. Zunno Died October 25, 2022 at Phelps Memorial Hospital, Sleepy Hollow, New York. He is 96 years old and has been a Maryknoll priest for 69 years. Father Zunno was born on June 11, 1926, in Brooklyn, New York, the son of Michael and Maddaline Sophia Zunno.
He had three brothers and five sisters. As a child, he attended Mount Carmel Church in Williamsburg and attended PS 17. In June 1944, he graduated from Cathedral Preparatory High School in Brooklyn.
On September 4, 1946, Father Zunno entered the Maryknoll Seminary in New York after two years of study at the Cathedral College.
He was ordained a priest at Maryknoll Seminary in New York on June 13, 1953. After graduation, Father Zunno studied Korean language and culture for a year at the Far Eastern Language Institute, Yale University, in preparation for his missionary career in Korea. , New Haven, Connecticut.
After arriving at the Maryknoll Mission in South Korea in 1954, he was appointed assistant pastor of the Chechon Church. In 1955, he was appointed pastor of Maryknoll Parish in Chung Pyong.
Father Zunno was the founding pastor of Oh Seon Church in Jeonju Diocese in 1960. In 1980, Father Zunno was transferred from the Diocese of Jeonju to the Diocese of South Busan. In August 1984, he became a full-time chaplain at Maryknoll Hospital in Busan, where he worked until his retirement.
After celebrating his 50th birthday in 2003, Father Zunno joined a retirement community (now the Senior Missionary Community) and returned to the United States to live in Maryknoll, New York. After his return, Father Zunno helped the Lady of Mount Carmel Church in Brooklyn.
A Mass of Christian Burial was held Nov. 4 at the Chapel of the Holy Spirit and Queen of Apostles Chapel, Maryknoll Community Center.
Father David Pfeiffer was the celebrant and Father Joseph Veneroso was the homilist. Burial followed at Maryknoll Community Cemetery, with her father, Lance Nadeau, presiding at the graveside service.
