Sister Maria Ines Martin, a Sister of St. Joseph for more than 70 years, died on November 8 at the age of 93. Born in San German, Puerto Rico, Maria Inés was one of six children in the loving family of Maria Isabel Acosta and Humberto Martin. . Alicia, her christened name, attended Coledio San Jose in her hometown and graduated from Regis College in Weston, Massachusetts with a BA in Spanish. The following year, answering God’s call, Alicia entered the Sisters of St. Joseph in Brentwood, New York.

After completing her novitiate, Sister Maria Ines began a teaching career that took her to St. Joseph Commercial Lyceum in Brooklyn, Colegio San Jose in San Germania, back to St. Joseph Commercial, and then to St. Joseph College. At the same time, he continued his studies in Spanish language and culture, earning a master’s degree from St. John’s University, a certificate in Spanish from the University of Madrid, and a doctorate from Columbia University.

In 1980, Sister María Inés returned to her roots and assumed the position of Principal of Coledio San José, which flourished under her strong leadership. During her retirement at St. Joseph’s Convent, Sister Maria Ines gave her time and talents in various ways, including helping the staff with English.

Father James Wood led a Mass of Christian Burial for Sister Maria Ines in the Chapel of the Sacred Heart. Interment followed at Calvary Cemetery in Brentwood.
