GURUGRAM: Action will be taken by the Executive and Superintendent Engineers if any worker is injured or dies in an accident while carrying out repairs on power distribution lines. Managing Director PC Meena All safety protocols should be followed by workers when working on power lines. A lineman who works on live electrical wires should be provided with all necessary safety equipment and tool kits. Violation of safety protocols, he said, would lead to accidents and loss of life.
Meena said that in case of any fatal or non-fatal accident, the sub-divisional officer (SDO) and junior engineer of the zone will be suspended, and disciplinary action will be taken against them as per rules. Besides, a show cause notice will be given to the Executive Engineer and Superintending Engineer of the department.
“All Executive Engineers and Superintendent Engineers have been directed to conduct surprise visits in their respective areas to check safety arrangements and to check whether safety gear and kits have been provided to line men and whether they are using them,” Meena said.
He said accidents at workplaces have increased and most of them have been found to be due to violation of safety protocols such as non-use of safety kits. “Action will be taken against officials who neglect safety protocols.” Meena He said they are also making a short documentary film to create awareness among linemen about safety protocols and the importance of safety kits. They will also issue a guide on dos and don’ts for linemen.
Safety of linemen, he reiterated, would be the responsibility of SDOs and junior engineers.
In July, Sekh Chhotu While trying to disconnect an 11 KV cable near the Discom’s office on MG Road (28), a contract worker was electrocuted.
According to an official, the power supply of a line is disconnected for maintenance work but in some cases, the work starts without stopping the supply. “As per protocol, linemen working on power cables have to wear rubber gloves and rubber boots along with other mandatory safety equipment,” the official said.
