GURGAON: The Irrigation Department has developed a ‘Water Security Plan’ for 162 villages in Gurgaon to improve water availability and rejuvenate groundwater sources. The move aims at localizing and micro-level planning for groundwater conservation and recharge.
Under the plan, the department will collect ground water and rainfall data at the village level. At present groundwater level information is available only at the district level. Officials said the two adjacent sectors and two villages may have different groundwater levels and require different interventions to recharge the groundwater. For this, it is important to collect information at the local level.
Water protection plan has been prepared under Atal Bhujal Yojana. Supervising Engineer of Irrigation Department Shiv Singh RawatThe project’s regional officer said: “The objective is to identify the current demand for water, how much rainwater is being used to recharge water sources and how to bridge the gap between demand and availability throughout the year.”
He said in Gurgaon, Pataudi, Sohna and 164 villages Farrukhnagar Blocks are classified as ‘red’ villages as they have seen the maximum decline in groundwater levels between 2010 and 2020. According to data from Pataudi block, some villages viz Dawn (ground water level 18.85 m below sea level) and Binola (14.35 m) have seen the maximum fluctuation in groundwater level over the past decade.
Under the water protection plan, government agencies will undertake reclamation of ponds to store rainwater and construct injection wells and recharge wells to raise water levels. “Various agencies like Panchayat Raj Department, Irrigation Department and related agencies are already working on several related projects. Now these will be monitored in a centralized manner and implemented as per the water protection plan for the respective villages,” said Rawat.
