New Delhi:
An officer entrusted with Gujarat’s election duties has been paid a lot for his posts on Instagram. Abhishek Singh, an IAS (Indian Administrative Service) officer, was picked up by the Election Commission for the way he posted on Instagram, sources said today.
Abhishek Singh used “Instagram for sharing his advertisement/affiliation as a General Inspector and used his official position to do publicity”, the Election Commissioner’s order said.
Ahead of next month’s Gujarat elections, Abhishek Singh, a cadre officer from Uttar Pradesh, has been appointed as the Chief Inspector of two constituencies in Ahmedabad – Bapunagar and Asarwa.
The officer, who identifies himself as Abhishek S IAS on social media, shared the two photos on Instagram. In one, he stands next to an official car with a headlight and “Investigator” written on the front. “Joined as Observer of Gujarat elections,” the caption said.
Another post showed him with three other officers and an armed security man, all smiling at the camera.
Mr Singh, who has an active presence on social media and describes himself as a “public servant, actor, social entrepreneur and a very passionate person”, also shared the photos on Twitter.
According to sources, the Electoral Commission “has serious concerns” about the post of Insta official, and therefore, “he has been removed from his duties as the Commissioner of Elections and has been banned from related activities to the polls until further orders.”
The officer was ordered to leave the constituency and report to his superior. All the government buildings allotted to him in Gujarat were also taken away, including the car in his posts.
Mr Singh has been replaced by Krishan Bajpai, another IAS (Indian Administrative Service) officer.
Gujarat will vote on December 1 and 5 for a new government. The results will be out on December 8.
