Gurugram: To prevent environmental degradation, Haryana has decided not to allow setting up of new stone-crushing units outside Gurugram, Faridabad and identified areas. Palwal A new draft notification by the Department of Environment and Climate Change states the new rules for setting up such units near forests, national highways, educational institutions, roads, water bodies and villages. The Department of Mines and Geology will identify the location and approve such units.
Draft circular issued by Additional Chief Secretary, Department of Environment, Vineet Garg, on November 11, stated, “No stone crusher shall be permitted to be installed in the stream- or river bed between flood-protection embankments. The distance of the new crusher should be 500 meters from any educational institution, one kilometer from any hospital or wildlife sanctuary and two kilometers from a national park. “Existing stone crushers and their extensions will not be affected by the new rules,” it added.
Each new unit shall have a minimum area of ​​one acre and shall be at a minimum distance of 500 meters from the nearest national or state highway, five kilometers from Delhi-NCR and two kilometers from the nearest municipal corporation limits.
On the other hand, stone crushers are banned within half a kilometer radius of any mining area or small hill to prevent illegal mining.
Any approved unit shall also have a green belt, extending at least 100 meters or more along its perimeter, with a minimum of 10 rows of trees.
The new units should also come with 50 sprinklers with a minimum ten-kilolitre-capacity water storage facility, which will sprinkle at least ten kiloliters of water per day on sites with a 100-tonne stone-crushing capacity to mitigate air pollution.
According to the draft notification, existing units will have to ensure pollution-control measures such as tiles in the premisesFully covered conveyor belts and fogging machines within one year of issue of notification. They must have metalled roads for vehicular movement on the premises.
“In the city, now 34 units are functioning,” said Anil AtwalMining Officer, Gurugram.
