Tthe NCR dogs have run away. Hundreds of their patrons are looking everywhere for them – posting on Facebook, Instagram, bills, and ads.
It happens every Diwali, but the dogs were given two years during the epidemic. At this point, the noise of the passes came back and the dogs were once again in the fighting zone. Now they are missing and the guards are at a loss to look for them everywhere.
“My friends and I are still posting on social media about it-on Instagram, WhatsApp and Facebook groups. We are also distributing the notices on foot, but the dogs are nowhere to be found,” says Mansi Rautela, patron of South and Central Delhi dog adoption group Wagging Tales. Four of their stray dogs have been missing since Diwali. He added that this happens every year.
Many guardians supported Mansi’s statement. And it doesn’t happen only during Diwali — even during Christmas, Bhai Dooj, Karwa Chauth, the loud bangers join the celebrations and the dogs run wild. Gayatri, who is studying at a veterinary school in Austria, and never before, lost two dogs this year after Diwali. Both returned with bite marks and scratches on their bodies, indicating what horrors they had endured.
Most rescuers and breeders are upset because it has been several days since they last saw their dog. “It’s been 13 days and we haven’t found our Chameli. He is old and needs a lot of care. I am doing everything to find him,” said Anupriya who runs an Instagram account called Dogs (& Cats) of Delhi. She has also announced a reward of Rs 25,000 to find her. dog
Gurugram-based rescuer and breeder Chhavi Goyal, 32, has been searching for her stray dog named Senior Onja, who has been missing since October 25. According to him, some people took advantage of Diwali this year to abuse stray dogs. “I saw people near my dog’s food place throwing cookies at him. We cannot report these people because they can get away with saying that they are just playing,” he said. Chhavi has announced Rs 10,000 as compensation. While searching for Onja Matua, Chhavi is caring for other dog siblings who are howling with worry for their lost family.

Fees, rescuers, PWD
Chhavi and Anupriya were contacted by many people who take care of dogs. Then there are those who want to find dogs for a fee. Others call it bad. But the community of dog adopters is united, and members are helping each other find lost dogs.
CCTV footage of feeding areas is also helping the herdsmen to find the dogs, but red tape by the Public Works Department is causing problems. Anupriya’s stray dog, Chameli lived near Delhi CM Arvind Kejriwal’s house, all covered under CCTV cameras. Even after submitting a written request, the PWD has not provided the tape. “It has been many days and the PWD Clerks keep saying it will take time,” said Anupriya.
In these difficult times, taxi drivers, patrolmen, street vendors, and traffic police are helping. “I was able to find one of my lost dogs because the NDMC staff helped me,” said Uma Ramesh, a retired Faridabad-based doctor. According to him, doing footwork is very useful in finding lost dogs.
“I have been working with stray dogs for the past 40 years and social media has never helped me find my dogs. What to do is talk to store owners, cheese sellers, chai wala, and guardians. In fact, the traffic police are very helpful,” says Uma.
Many lost strays were found up to 20-30 km away from home. Search parties are going out every day and the dog keepers are not losing hope.
