Life pass holders for the struggling Mt Ruapehu ski fields have two more days to indicate whether they are willing to stump up funds to help save the Whakapapa and Turoa ski fields.
The government asked lifetime pass holders for a $2500 lump sum towards a new entity to manage the mountain, along with a future levy of up to $250 a year for two to three years to fund maintenance and ongoing capital development.
Turoa and Whakapapa ski fields went into voluntary administration last month, leaving them about $40 million in the red.
In exchange for a contribution, the government says it will cancel part of the debt. PWC, the administrator of Ruapehu Alpine Lifts, is also looking at others it hopes could join a crowd-funding effort – including local residents, mountain staff and local businesses.
Kathryn talks to Robert Pigou, MBIE deputy executive director; and Sam Clarkson, one of the two life pass holders in the creditors’ committee – is also a local business owner.
