MediaTek’s latest flagship TV SoC, the Pentonic 1000, has been launched, and it will power 4K 120Hz TVs.

If you have a smart TV, then your TV has some kind of advanced chipset in it – more than what a “normal” TV can pack, of course. MediaTek is a major supplier of TV chipsets, and its Pentonic 1000 is the latest flagship smart TV SoC from the company designed for 4K at 120Hz. It has Wi-Fi 6/6E, MEMC smooth video, Dolby Vision IQ with Precision, and 8-screen Intelligent View so users can watch or view multiple streams at the same time.

While specific details are scarce, MediaTek says the Pentonic 1000 SoC packs a “multicore CPU”, dual GPU, APU (AI Processing Unit), and video rendering engines. It can do VRR up to 4K 144Hz for gaming applications, but it will stay at 4K 120Hz. There’s also Auto Low Latency Mode, or ALLM. Playback options include AV1, HEVC, VP9, ​​and VVC or H.266, “entering the first wave of VVC adoption”.

“We designed the MediaTek Pentonic 1000 specifically to handle today’s TV trends, including 4K streaming, cloud gaming, video conferencing and group viewing,” said Alex Chen, General Manager of MediaTek’s TV Business Unit. “With support for 4K HDR content, 120Hz frame rates, MEMC, AI enhancements, Wi-Fi 6/6E connectivity and cross-codecs such as VVC, the Pentonic 1000 will deliver the ultimate 4K viewing experience.”

Overall, the Pentonic 1000 is shaping up to be a good chipset for TVs. The company’s Smart View technology is even more interesting, as it means you can search for TV channels, preview a channel or another channel, and even be on the phone with someone at the same time. It’s a bit of a case for a TV user, but it’s more than most people will ever need, and that’s the point.

While specific availability details have not been provided, the company says TVs with the Pentonic 1000 will be commercially available in the first quarter of 2023.
