The Indian team qualified for the semi-finals of the T20 World Cup on Sunday after South Africa’s shock defeat to the Netherlands in Adelaide. India are top of the table in Group 2 and need to win their last match against Zimbabwe to reach the semi-finals; however, with South Africa’s defeat no other team barring Pakistan or Bangladesh will reach the same number of points as India in the group, confirming the side’s entry to the knockout round. Pakistan eventually beat Bangladesh to complete the semi-finals later in the day.

Meanwhile, India beat Zimbabwe by 71 runs to top their group and set up a semi-final against England on Thursday in Adelaide. India’s star batsman Suryakumar Yadav shone for the side on Sunday, as he produced a brilliant display of powerful batting to score an unbeaten 61 off just 25 deliveries; the 31-year-old batsman hit six fours and four sixes en route to knocking in a half-century.

During the interval, Suryakumar also became the first Indian batsman in T20I history to score 1,000 runs in a calendar year; he joined Mohammad Rizwan in the select list of only batsmen to hit four figures in a single season in the shortest format (international tournaments).

After the match, Suryakumar Yadav posted pictures from his performance with the caption, “Couldn’t be better.” Virat Kohli, who has shared many interesting relationships with the batsman in recent times, had a two-word response to the post. Kohli wrote, “alag level,” followed by ‘fire’ emojis.

Suryakumar has been a hit in the last few matches; against South Africa, the batsman was the only player for India as the team lost in the middle runs. Suryakumar scored 68 off just 40 deliveries to take India to 133/9 in 20 overs. The batsman scored 30 off 17 deliveries against Bangladesh.

India will be looking for a similar performance from Suryakumar when the side take on England on Thursday for a place in the final of the tournament.
