Golden State Warriors forward Klay Thompson shared a great story on his Instagram account on Sunday night, after he had a terrible night against the Sacramento Kings.
The four-time champion had five points and 17 points in the contest, despite making 13 three-point attempts and 16 shots overall. The Warriors fell short early in the third quarter in a 122-115 loss.
Klay Thompson’s self-confidence hasn’t wavered through the tough times, but is that half the problem for him and the Golden State Warriors?
Thompson reiterated his belief in himself in a candid message to his fans after the game, promising fans that his slow start to the season will turn around.
Thompson is shooting 33% from deep this year and just 35.1% from the field. He was one of several Warriors players who underperformed, as the NBA champions fell to a 5-8 record in one of the surprises of the NBA season to date.
But despite the struggles of his team and the team, Thompson strongly believes that the only way to push forward is to shoot harder. The 32-year-old is currently hitting a career high in three-point attempts at 9.6 per game — not a great mark when you’re shooting a low percentage- work.
At what point does self-belief border on arrogance, and nothing more than a serious dislike of the team’s offense? Thompson is the leading three-point shooter in NBA history, combined with his four championships, giving him a certain credibility and trust among Warriors fans.
He wants it all right now – fans are holding their breath every time he jumps, rather than having the confidence that has kept him going for the past decade.
To be fair to Thompson, there were as many struggles as ever, even before his two serious injuries. Each time he rebounded, he more often than not shot over 40% from three on the season.
The good thing about him is that the starting lineup, regardless of his shooting issues, remains dominant. This is probably the reason, above all, that he has the opportunity to organize his words in order to survive.
