It may not take long to stabilize
WhatsApp is one of the best messaging apps out there, and although it has historically not played well with the multi-device lifestyle, it is slowly changing. WhatsApp Web and other desktop versions have been available for years, allowing you to chat on your computer independently of your phone. The app wants to take it a step further with a mode that comes with a new option that lets you use an additional Android device for your WhatsApp instance. After beta testing it with Android tablets for several weeks, the latest beta version of WhatsApp now allows some to pair additional phones.
As WABetaInfo noticed, WhatsApp beta version 2.22.24.18 appears normal when you first open it and ask for pairing after installing it on a new phone. When you tap the three-dot overflow menu in the upper right corner, you’ll see a new option Connect the device. Tapping on it will display a QR code that allows you to connect your existing account to your new phone, with both phones, and then use the app. It comes with the same behavior as you know from WhatsApp desktop, only you can use it on your second Android device like phone or tablet. Like WhatsApp desktop, WhatsApp doesn’t need your primary phone to be turned on or connected to the internet to run on your companion device.
The new WhatsApp beta version also comes with a new screen that tells users about “WhatsApp on Android Tablet”. This multi-device feature now serves as extended knowledge for mobile devices. If you’re a beta tester, you can open your main WhatsApp setup, go to the Linked Devices page, and tap the three-dot button in the top-right corner to see the Linked Devices Beta option. It will then display a screen showing how you can install your Android tablet as an additional device to the instance installed on your smartphone.
This new Companion Mode is marked as beta, which means users should expect bugs and issues, as well as some broken features. However, setting up companion mode on your Android tablet or second phone is a very similar process to setting up a regular desktop instance — just launch WhatsApp on your tablet and you’ll receive a QR code that you can scan with your smartphone. This process has probably already been tried and true, and you shouldn’t expect too many issues.
For now, this feature is only available to a few lucky beta users, but that may change soon. You can try to join the beta from the Play Store, but it seems to be full. If so, you can also grab the current beta release from APK Mirror. Note that this feature also seems to include a server switch, so even with the latest version on your second phone or tablet, you may not be one of the lucky beta testers to access this feature.
