Jeff Passan took to Instagram to break down MLB’s free agency news Saturday morning.
The move comes after a week from hell for Twitter after Elon Musk unveiled the Twitter Blue certification program as a serious disaster.
Twitter was in trouble when fake news started targeting companies and people. Finally, Musk disabled the Twitter Blue service to test and assess the situation. It is unclear how long the suspension will last.
The sports media industry was in dire straits. Fake accounts with blue badge verification will start creating stories. No one knew what was true or not.
WAIT… IS INSTAGRAM COOL AGAIN?
Passan posted on his Instagram account that reliever Rafael Montero agreed to a three-year contract with the Houston Astros. He posted the news on his Twitter account, while hinting at the future of Twitter.
TWITTER VERIFICATION PROGRAM IS CURRENTLY COMMUNICATING
Passan is one of the most famous and popular baseball reporters out there. No one can underestimate the importance if he and other journalists start using Instagram to report breaking news instead of Twitter.
This past week, Twitter began rolling out its new Twitter Blue subscription service.
Anyone who paid $7.99 received a bonus option, including a blue verification token. However, Twitter allowed many accounts without doing a thorough background check, leading to the entry of fake accounts. Suddenly, verified accounts claiming everyone from LeBron James to pharmaceutical company Eli Lilly started posting fake news.
Many people use Twitter as a place to get information. If the credibility of the platform is compromised, then users will start looking elsewhere.
Time will tell if Instagram is the place for them.
