Gaining thousands of followers may not be an official benefit of working on Instagram – but working in and around social media does have benefits.

As an early stage marketing manager on Instagram, Joy Ofodu had a small audience of about 5,000 followers in the fall of 2020, according to SocialBlade data.

Just two years later, that audience had exploded twenty times. With more than 114,000 Instagram followers (and 100,000 on TikTok), Ofodu, who turned to social media as an outlet during the pandemic, created a platform where he posts funny stories about everything from sex to technology.

Last month, he quit his job at Instagram to become a full-time creator and entrepreneur.

“People look at me on Instagram and I’m a creator and think I’m crazy about content,” Ofodu told Insider in October.

But as an integrated brand marketing manager, Ofodu has no access to secret hacks when it comes to building an Instagram audience.

“It’s not my job to tell other producers what to do,” he said. “I’m in a place where it’s removed, and I think that’s really helpful.”

Some of the best advice Ofodu said he received came from people outside the Meta organization, such as talent agents and other producers.

Here are 4 tips from Ofodu for growing your audience on Instagram.

Be consistent with what and how often you send

“The advice I started applying in my own work was to be consistent,” Ofodu said. “I think my algorithm is a monster, a hungry monster. My special algorithm monster gets hungry three times a week.”

Follow events and watch trends

“I use popular music, some of the other ‘good editors’ in the house, but nothing that is not available on the @Creators Instagram page,” said Ofodu about growing his page.

Ofodu also said he uses hashtags a lot.

Try and release the pressure

“The other is bringing everyone down,” Ofodu said.

While Instagram is known for its “cool nature,” that identity has evolved, Ofodu said. From photo collages to comedy short videos, Instagram has evolved into changing themes.

“I saw that, I swallowed it and I spat it out,” Ofodu said. “I knew for sure that was part of my movies. I don’t have to be perfect. I don’t want to fit in and present myself like a TV anchor, I can be talk to people since I told you. my friends.”

Find a niche and run with it

After speaking with a talent agent who represents artists and other producers, Ofodu was given a very specific piece of advice: the bottom line.

“Instead of reporting on technology, travel, [or] photo, I was just reading about sex​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​with a humorous lens,” Ofodu said. That turned my audience off.”
