Amazon Fire tablets have never been known to offer large internal storage. The latest Fire HD 8 and Fire HD 8 Plus models come in two storage versions, 32GB and 64GB. None of these figures are huge given how they are positioned as a media consuming entity. When you start collecting photos, music files, games, movies, and more, you can quickly run out of storage. Fortunately, both come with a microSD card slot, allowing you to expand your storage options significantly. Take the Fire HD 8 Plus for example, which supports cards up to 1TB in size, which you’ll probably need at some point.

Also, the good thing about the external card on the Fire tablet is that they can be used as internal memory. So, as Pocket-Lint says, you can install applications and run them directly from the microSD card itself, as well as with the applications you have installed on the tablet’s memory. In other words, the microSD card acts as an extension of the tablet’s own internal storage. Once you’ve inserted the card correctly and no error messages are displayed, you can move content to and from the external card in a simple process.

Here are the steps:

  1. Launch Settings and tap on Storage.
  2. Select “Move data to SD card” option.
  3. You will be redirected to another screen where you have to confirm that you want to transfer the content to the SD card.

The process will take time depending on the amount of data you choose to store in the external environment.

The process of moving apps is almost the same.

  1. Launch Settings and tap on Storage as before.
  2. Select “Move apps to SD card” option.
  3. In the pop-up message that appears, click the “Move Apps” button.

The process usually takes some time, so please wait until the process is complete.

Errors, if any

You may encounter errors stating that the SD card you inserted is not supported by the device or is incorrect. In this case, you need to format the SD card before it is available for use. To format the storage, tap on the “Format and wipe” option in the displayed notifications.

On the next card formatting screen you’ll be taken to, you’ll need to choose whether you want to format it so that the OS sees it as an extension of your internal storage or use it as a standard portable SD card.

If you want to not only store content on the SD card, but also install and run apps on it, choose the latter option.

You will be presented with the usual warning message that all data on the card will be permanently lost after you format it.

Ignore the message and agree to format the card if you are sure that nothing imported is saved on the card

Manually format the SD card

You can also format the SD card manually. Here are the steps.

  1. Go to Settings > Storage
  2. Tap SD card.
  3. Tap on the three dots shown in the upper corner.
  4. Select “Format as Portable Storage” or “Format as Internal Storage”.
