Ever since Instagram changed its algorithm in 2016 to show you ads based on how the app interests you, rather than time segments, users have been searching for ways to improve their experience. For some, that means turning the ads for their friends or favorite influencers so they don’t miss the pictures they want to see. Yes, it all sounds complicated – but it also gives you a unique Instagram experience.
Blocking ads is pretty easy to do, but let’s be clear about one thing before we go any further: This algorithm is still evolving. However, if you want to make sure you don’t miss a message from the people you like to follow, you may want to turn on notifications. So what should you do so that you don’t miss the ads that you really want to see?
To turn on notifications, go to the account you want to stay on. On their profile, you will see an arrow (right next to the three dots in the upper right corner). Click the arrow and you will be sent to a window that shows all the News, Stories, Videos, Videos, and Live Videos next to the toggle buttons. From here, you can pick and choose which ads you want pinged. Note that for Live Videos, you can choose to receive notifications for each Live from this account, some notifications (Instagram chooses the Lives you like best based on its algorithm), or You can turn off all Live notifications.
Once you’ve selected the posts you want to be notified about, you’re all set to move forward. Yes, you can also opt-out of advertising at any time.
Yes, it can be a pain to do this with all the Instagram accounts you love; but this is a great solution to make sure you don’t miss your favorite designer’s latest #OOTD, a photo gallery from your friends.
