Hive Social has exploded in popularity while the future of Instagram and Twitter is in question. The three-year-old social media app hit one million users last week after a massive increase in sign-ups.

Although Hive has been around for years, the app has seen a surge of new interest in the past month.

TechCrunch Hive reportedly saw an increase in users in the weeks leading up to Elon Musk’s takeover from Twitter on October 27 and the following days.

On November 22, the digital analytics platform Sensor Tower confirmed to CNN Business Hive found nearly 871,000 entries worldwide – more than a third of which came in the previous week alone.

That same day, Hive said it had gained 250,000 new users overnight, despite the email verification process not working. Hive also announced that it has passed one million users as the app rose to the top of the social networking category in the US App Store last week.

What is Hive Social?

Hive has been described as a social media platform that is a hybrid between Twitter, Instagram, Tumblr, and even Myspace, with text, photo, and video posts supported.

On its website, Hive promises to bring back “what you love about social media in a new way” and says the app is focused on “simplicity.”

Outwardly, Hive Social looks very similar to Twitter and Instagram due to its emphasis on text and visuals.

Hive users can follow other accounts and send messages or photos. They can also like, comment, and re-share posts from other users.

Like Twitter, Hive has a feed that allows users to follow different topics with hashtags that allow users to discover similar topics. Unlike Twitter, there is no limit on the style of posts.

Interestingly, Hive only has a feed that displays user content in the order it was posted. This is in contrast to the current algorithmic feeds that Twitter and Meta apps push to its users, which harkens back to the early days of social media.

‘The closest example to Twitter’

Hive was started by 22-year-old college student Kassandra Pop in 2019 while she was teaching herself a degree. The platform is run by just two people, and the app’s indie startups have really attracted Generation Z users to Hive.

However, Hive Social’s sudden popularity is linked to Musk’s takeover of Twitter.

Hive’s feed reminds users of a “simpler time” in social media, and this technical nostalgia is a favorite among users.

It’s a throwback to the MySpace era on the app. Hive users can choose a song to play when others visit their profile and choose a color scheme for their account.

However, as expected when an app is popular, Hive has shown some weaknesses with its platform. There have been reports of numerous app crashes and issues with identity verification, to name a few. When working properly, Hive can run very slowly, no doubt due to the large number of new users taxing the small company’s servers.

Hive still has a lot of flaws to fix but it’s probably the most useful and comprehensive approach to Twitter.
