The Albany Town Council (Louisiana) Day began on November 14 with verses from the world’s oldest extant scriptures.
Prominent Hindu statesman Rajan Z delivered the invocation from ancient Sanskrit scriptures remotely before the Albany Town Council. After the Sanskrit delivery, he read the English interpretation of the prayer. Sanskrit is a sacred language in Hinduism and is considered the root language of the Indo-European languages.
Jade, who is president of the Universal Society of Hinduism, recited from the Rigveda, the world’s oldest scripture still in circulation; The Upanishads and the Bhagavad-gita (Songs of the Lord), both ancient Hindu scriptures, are besides lines. He begins and ends the prayer with “Om”, the mystical syllable containing the universe, which is used in Hinduism to introduce and conclude religious acts.
Reciting from the Brahmadaranyakopanishad, Rajan insisted “Aasto ma dukha gamaya, tamso ma jyotir gamaya, mrityu mamritam gamaya”; which he then explained “take us from the unreal to the real, from darkness to light, and from death to immortality.” Reciting the Bhagavad Gita, he exhorted the council members and others present to always keep the welfare of others in mind.
