While the internet can be dark and full of horror at times (did any Game of Thrones fans catch that reference?), some of us are still scrolling through our phones in search of fun things to do. the gentleness to make us laugh.
For this list, we have come up with some of the funniest Instagram stories that focus on jokes and parodies about life in Bali. From inspiring people to humorous stories about the local generation’s situation, these stories are all clever in capturing the mundane aspects of living in this island paradise.
We’ll occasionally update this page if funny news comes up. If you think we’re missing someone who should be on this list, please let us know.
1. @north
Kicking off this list is @northsidestory, who also has a TikTok handle, @defriedbanana. This local can give Meryl Streep a run for her money with her ability to mimic the sounds heard in Bali. He can do Russian, Spanish, French, Australian and “Jaksel” AKA South Jakarta youth. He also misleads Balinese people on their homes.
He’s so good at himself that he doesn’t mind changing clothes for his stories, like this post where he mocks life in Canggu or this one where he pokes fun at Instagram followers. In this post, he mocks the arrogant people who like to drive around Bali without a helmet and their arrogant attitude (while, with a PSA telling people to listen to traffic laws).
The epitome of a quiet island man who doesn’t take himself too seriously, @northsidestory is one to follow.
2. @thecanggupole
@thecanggupole may be a bit self-deprecating in their approach to comedy, but that’s probably why many people living in Canggu like their posts, as discussed below on Jalan Raya Canggu shopping, or this tells about where in Bali you should go based on what you want to get out of the world.
Undoubtedly inspired by Overheard in NY, @overheard_in_canggu runs through the worst things people allegedly heard while living in Bali. Their account is open to DMs by people who want to post what they say they heard, and while some are made up, they’re all pretty funny.
We put @overheardbali as an honorary name here because most of the posts in that account are in Indonesian. However, they have some good, related posts, like this one that talks about Jakartans “working from Bali.”
Well, this is really sad. @ubudonacid makes fun of the personalities of the people of Ubud and what they do (and some of their … problematic behavior), including traditional characters such as life teachers and spiritual “gurus”. Some of the jokes are highly symbolic, highlighting issues such as ownership, toxicity, and distribution.
Also, some of their jokes may not be for everyone. But if there’s one place in the world where we can chill and appreciate comedy, it’s Bali. Don’t forget to laugh, people.
