Google’s first foldable smartphone has been rumored for quite some time under several names. According to today’s new leak, it’s called the Pixel Fold.
It’s apparently still in the works, currently one of “Google’s top-secret projects,” and it’s expected to launch next May alongside the Pixel Tablet. We’re guessing the I/O reveal will be at Google’s annual developer conference, since it’s always in May. There will be two color versions that Google calls Chalk (aka white) and Obsidian (aka black).
Countless renders of the device have been leaked in both colors and recreated based on 3D renders and “other stuff”, but this time there are no specifications.
The unnamed sources who made this report possible claim that the Pixel Fold will have a “typical Pixel-esque” and Pixel flagship camera. One source pointed out that the device is very heavy, but “compared to what?” a question.
The price of the Pixel Fold has also dropped: $1,799. That’s the price of Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold4 when it was launched in the US in August, and we’re saying this because it’s going to be the Pixel Fold’s main competitor for the foreseeable future. That being said, the Galaxy Z Fold4 will definitely benefit from tons of discounts when Google’s foldable finally hits the streets, so it remains to be seen if the Pixel Fold will have enough differentiating points to draw people in.
The Pixel Fold’s “camera bar” isn’t as wide as the Pixel 7 and 7 Pro, as it doesn’t go all the way to the edge. It’s still good enough, but somehow it makes the phone instantly identifiable as a Pixel. There are two 9.5MP selfie cameras, one inside the hole for the outer screen and the other to the right of the surprisingly large top bezel of the inner screen.
The power button has a fingerprint reader and there are two speakers – one at the top and one at the bottom. That’s all for this leak, but we expect the native Pixel Fold to be powered by the Tensor chipset.
