As awesome as devices like Chromecast with Google TV and NVIDIA’s SHIELD units can be, one of the downsides in each area is the limited amount of storage both devices are equipped with out of the box. The issue with the small amount of storage is the fact that you can run out of space quickly if you try to load more than a few apps. I’m not sure why I said that as if it were a theoretical issue, because in reality, this happens all the time with these devices.
Today, Google has announced a plan that should help others in this situation, because smart TV devices will not increase the amount of storage any time soon. After all, price is the main selling point of these devices and adding storage will increase that.
Google’s plan is to push Android App Bundles to TV devices the same way they did to phones by 2021. Android App Bundles (AABs) are a publishing format that replaced the APK file. These AABs make an average of 20% of the total size of the archive compared to an APK, allow apps to be archived instead of being completely downloaded (faster installation), and are designed for optimized distribution by developers. All in all, they are a huge success.
The transition to Android App Bundles for Android TV and Google TV will begin in May 2023. Google thinks that this is a lot of time for app owners and developers to comply with the change, as they see that it should only take one engineer about 3 days to go. migrate existing TV app from APK to AAB. If companies don’t remove their apps, Google can hide them on the TV screen.
Google believes that Android App Bundles “bring a great experience” to both developers and users, “especially in the living room.” How exciting to report that change. It’s lovely.
Speaking of cute, the Chromecast with Google TV (4K) is down to $40 on Black Friday. Buy one.
