OVERVIEW – Recently, I have been engaged in the hobby of making stained glass. One of the parts of my hobby that I really want to get into is creating my own designs. It’s nearly impossible to draw a nice smooth curved line with a mouse, so I’ve been looking for a budget graphics tablet to use for design. The Gaomon graphics tablet fits the bill, it’s not just a drawing tablet, it’s a monitor too! This means I can use it as an extra monitor as well as a capture device. Since the pen is passive, there is no battery inside, it is slim and balanced in the hand. Overall, I’m very impressed with the Gaomon PD1220 11.6-inch graphics tablet.

Design and features

The design of the Gaomon PD1220 11.6-inch graphics tablet is super sleek. It comes with a built-in matte screen protector to prevent glare and scratches on the surface while taking pictures. There are four rubber feet on the bottom of the tablet, which will keep it from falling off the table when the cat decides to leave it. It’s the size of a large tablet that’s easy to fit in a backpack.

Top: Left, Middle: Top, Bottom: Right

On the right side of the tablet is the headphone jack and thumb switch. The switch is used to control volume when headphones are plugged in and to navigate through the OSD menu when headphones are disconnected. On top of the tablet is the power button and serial data. On the right side, there are three connection ports for a tablet, one mini HDMI and two USB C ports. There are several ways to connect the tablet to power and the main computer. Use cables that connect HDMI cable and USB cable to their respective ports. Power can be supplied in one of two ways, either by using the supplied power adapter or by allowing the host computer to provide power. Although not supplied with the tablet, you can use the USB C to USB C cable to connect the tablet to a computer without needing the other cables provided. It is important to note that the USB C port on the computer must support USB3.1 and DP1.2 for this method to work.

The included faux leather stand/cover comes in place, allowing you to choose which way to stick it. I decided to attach it to the top of the tablet to use as a stand while taking pictures. Attaching it to the bottom of the tablet allows the tablet to stand vertically like a monitor. It just depends on your use case.

Above you can see how the cover folds up nicely to form a stand that holds the tablet up.

I love pens. It feels great in the hand, not too heavy and well balanced. It does not require a battery, so the weight distribution is even and allows the battery to be narrower than a design where the battery needs to be installed inside. The pen has two short keys.

The pen holder doubles as a nib storage and nib removal tool. It comes with eight extra nibs and the hole in the middle of the handle is used to pull the nib out of the pen when you want to replace it.

Another accessory included with the tablet is a touch-rejection glove. It’s double sided and runs a little on the small side. It fits my hands very well and I’m a petite woman, so I doubt it will be comfortable for those with larger hands.

Set up

Installing the Gaomon PD1220 11.6 inch graphics tablet is easy, first visit the site provided in the manual to download the drivers for the tablet and operating system you are using. After installation, select the desired method of connecting the tablet to the computer. The tablet should turn on automatically and copy or expand it to display your computer screen. This setting can be adjusted in your computer settings. Once the tablet looks the way you want it, you can use the pen to select programs and use it to draw.

Unfortunately, this is where I ran into problems. The pen doesn’t do anything on the tablet. I went into the Gaomon driver and messed around with the settings, but as you can see below, the driver doesn’t recognize that the tablet is connected and running.

I emailed their customer support and they were less than helpful. They simply suggested repeating the startup instructions which did not fix the problem. Support initially responded once a day, but it’s been over a week and I haven’t heard from them again, so I’m continuing to write this review. I gave them a chance to respond and tried to resolve the issue. I tried messing with my computer settings to get it to work but nothing changed. Unfortunately, this is my review which is very short and reflects the feel and look of the tablet. Maybe I got a dud and I plan to continue working with support to get it working, but as I write this review, the tablet won’t work as a different monitor and tablet.

What I like

  • Sleek design
  • Clear display
  • The pen feels good in the hand

What would I change?

  • I couldn’t figure out how to make it work

Final thoughts

The Gaomon PD1220 11.6 inch graphics tablet looks like a sleek fun monitor drawing tablet. Unfortunately, even after working with support, I couldn’t get it to work completely. It’s a great second monitor, but I could never get the pen to work on the tablet. I don’t want to break the company completely because I may have gotten a lemon and I’ll keep asking for help, but at this point the tablet just doesn’t work for me. doesn’t work!
