MILLIONS of euros in funding have been announced for West Cork, with Bandon, Macroom and Sherkin Island all set to benefit from the Government’s Rural Regeneration and Development Fund.

Bandon will receive €5.5 million in funding for a project focused on the development of the town centre, which will include the conversion of a vacant building into a community space, the transformation of the former library into a facility e-hub remote work, the provision of new public spaces and large public works that will support active transport.

The funding of 1.9 million euros for Sherkin Island is for the company Neart, the creative and digital center. This project will support the West Cork Island community to grow the development and provide the new hub, which will support the Neart Initiative, a three-year income and job creation plan.

€7.2 million will go towards the regeneration of Macroom town centre. It will be another boost for the city after the news that the long-awaited bypass will finally open from the beginning of December.
