Stanislaus County Sheriff’s investigators were not happy last week when they learned that the family of a man shot to death in a Sept. 27 attempted home robbery in rural Ceres released surveillance video at on Instagram.
Authorities did not know the video existed, leaving questions as to why it was not released to investigators at the beginning of the investigation.
Christian Sanchez, 22, was shot dead in the 6 a.m. attack as six masked men – seen on video as he tried to leave the home – entered a home in the 2600 block of Gondring Road outside of Ceres.
“We were surprised that the person behind the family decided to post that (video) and not share it with our investigators,” said Sheriff’s Department spokesman Sgt. Luke Schwartz. “They went on social media first so it’s really confusing when you talk about it six weeks after the fact.”
Schwartz said he doesn’t know why the video wasn’t sent to investigators in the first place, saying “it seems like the people we’re dealing with have a back story and some history and some cause.We are also sorry but our supervisors are trying to play catch up.
Investigators are still trying to determine if the video is authentic, he said.
“It’s a challenge that comes before it’s handed over to the inspectors.”
The video has created some new tips.
A camera mounted on the front of the house shows Sanchez being attacked by armed men in the yard and brought back into the house with his hands in the air. A voice is heard asking Sanchez his name. The robber also asked if there were children inside, where to find money and “where is everybody?” Inside the home, he called out, “Sheriff’s Department, Stanislaus County police.”
All of the suspects were wearing hoodies and had their faces covered. One suspect is seen wearing a dark colored hoodie with MK on the chest.
Most of the villagers were asleep at the time but were woken up by the “tremendous shaking”. Sanchez was seriously injured when paramedics arrived. Emergency personnel arrived at the scene and began CPR, and he was taken to a local hospital where he died.
After the shooting, all the suspects fled. There was no description of the suspects or a separate vehicle.
When the video was released, one brother said the video was released after soul-searching and decided to act because “We don’t want this case to be another cold case, just another case a stack of papers.” They called on those who knew the men and their voices to contact the family or authorities. The article ends: “All we want is justice for my brother. If you could share this on your profile or around, it would be appreciated.”
The victim’s family said the assailants ran away empty-handed.
