Beware, there are fake social media accounts spoofing the CIAC trying to trick fans into buying tickets and streaming games to Sunday night’s quarter-final football games.
There is an account called “CIAC FOOTBALL UPDATE” on Instagram with links to buy tickets in advance. The accounts seem authentic because GoFan’s logo is on it — the ticket provider is CIAC.
There are also accounts on Twitter that use the CIAC logo as their profile picture and “CIAC Football Championships” as their account name. But the account handle is a random name and numbers.
Also on Facebook, links are being shared to stream games from bot accounts.
In most cases the social media accounts are for the program’s athletic department, and the team and school are assigned to make the post official.
And in some of these cases, athletic departments, teams and school accounts have shared the link with their students.
All of these links involve stealing personal and credit information.
“It goes up by the day,” said John Holt, a CIAC spokesman. “It’s hard to track, it’s hard to police, the best we can do is send a message and warn people about it.”
On Monday, the CIAC admitted through its Twitter account that there was another fake link to view the games on the NFHS website. One for the Berlin-Branford game in Class M and one for the Windham-Gilbert/Northwestern/Housatonic game in Class SS.
Holt said the CIAC was made aware of the fake Instagram account on Tuesday morning.
Tickets for all games can be purchased on the main CIAC sports page.
Full online coverage of the playoff games in the playoffs can be found at nfhsnetwork.com.
“That’s the only way to know you’re going in the right direction,” Holt said.@ciacsports).”
There will be no ticket sales for any of tonight’s 32 finals at the gate. All games begin at 6:30 p.m
