LOS ANGELES — Ellen Pompeo announced her departure from “Grey’s Anatomy” in a social media post dedicated to fans of the show on Thursday.

“I am forever grateful and humbled by the love and support you have all shown me, Meredith GRAY and the show for 19 years!” the actress, 53, wrote in an Instagram post.

“Through it all … none of it … would have been possible without the best fans in the world,” he continued. “You are all RIDERS, you all made the ride so fun and ICONIC!! I love you so much and thank you so much.”

Pompeo teased that this won’t be the last time viewers will see Meredith Grey, who has appeared in more than 400 episodes since “Grey’s Anatomy” debuted in 2005.

“This isn’t your first time on a rollercoaster… you know the show must go on and I’ll be back to visit,” she concluded. “With love and thanks XoE.”

It was revealed before the first season of 19 that Pompeo will limit his role on the show, appearing in only eight episodes while remaining as an executive producer and continuing to provide information about all aspects of this period.

Meredith announced in the midseason finale, which aired Nov. 10, that she is leaving Gray Sloan Memorial for her work in Alzheimer’s research and the Catherine Fox Foundation.

A trailer for the mid-season premiere shows Pompeo — the show’s namesake — saying goodbye to his colleague as he embarks on his new adventure.

“Grey’s Anatomy” airs Thursdays on this ABC channel.
