A team of cardiologists has deployed an improved version of the Micro Transcatheter Pacing System, the world’s smallest leadless pacemaker.

The entire procedure was done without surgery by inserting a small capsule-sized pacemaker through a leg vein, restoring the woman’s normal heart rate. A 76-year-old woman underwent life-saving therapy at Paras Hospital in Gurgaon.

The elderly woman was brought to the hospital with injuries due to a fall due to a blackout due to a weak heart or slow heart rate, the hospital said in a statement.

The patient had faced several blackouts and had undergone angioplasty nine months earlier, the hospital said. He was prescribed regular thinners after his angioplasty, the hospital added.

“He arrived at the hospital with multiple injuries, including broken ribs, broken leg bones, an injured head, a bruised neck and eye. She forgot the first fall in the bathroom but her second fall prompted immediate action from family members, who rushed her to the hospital. He did not remember anything about the blackout and was weak due to continuous blood thinners,” said Dr Amit Bhushan Sharma, Director and Unit Head, Cardiology, Paras Hospital, Gurgaon.

He said the patient had no previous symptoms such as chest pain but experienced blackouts and had no recollection of falling. Such cases often occur where people die in sleep or during exercise due to a sudden drop in heart rate that affects the functioning of other organs, especially the brain.

“When he was brought to the emergency, the doctors immediately put in a temporary pacemaker to increase the heart rate and once he stabilized we put in a permanent pacemaker. A permanent pacemaker is in the form of vitamin C capsules. There was no cut to implant it, as he already had many wounds and the blood was thin. We implanted this pacemaker through a leg vein and then the patient was discharged within a few days,” said the doctor who led the implantation, Dr. Amit Bhushan Sharma, Director and Unit Head, Cardiology, Paras Hospital, Gurugram.
