Councilor Diane Ballantyne introduced the idea of ​​a Wellington regional Instagram account at a committee meeting on Tuesday

WELLINGTON COUNTY – Wellington County’s Instagram account will raise awareness of local events and help the county reach young people, council heard Tuesday.

At the council’s economic development committee meeting on Tuesday, Wellington Area Manager Jana Burns presented the website, Experience Wellington, which lists the activities of the winter and local events.

Councilor Diane Ballantyne took to her council Instagram account to comment on the events.

Ballantyne has a great idea on the Experience Wellington webpage.

“It’s great to have a vacation website and affiliate links,” says Ballantyne.

Ballantyne then suggested that the council set up its own Instagram account.

“However, I think it’s a good idea for staff to create a Wellington regional Instagram account. In order for us to do that, it’s up to the council.”

The council can control what is posted on the account.

“Then we can use it, by communicating and the ways we want to use it to make things happen.”

While Experience Wellington showcases winter events in the county, so can an Instagram account.

“We can read all the different events that are happening.”

Ballantyne argues that younger generations are turning to social media for information.

“You know, people younger than me don’t search websites for information. They go to Instagram. And Instagram is a video platform.

If an event has an interesting theme, it can be displayed on the counter.

“So I think it’s something that we can also be inspired by because of the media, or the real media, when people come to that wonderful Christmas market. It’s packed and cars are still on the road.”

When people make Instagram posts about the fun they had at council-related events, the council can repost that on its own Instagram account.

“You know people can post about what they do, how they live their lives. And we have a chance to read that again to show that people from far and wide council about all the wonderful things happening in the council.

Although the chairman of the committee, councilman Jeff Duncan, wants to consider an Instagram account for the council, he is cautious and wants to do it right.

“It’s good, I have to say, the communication and communications will be much broader and the whole council wants to manage that. The budget, Instagram is a good tool that we can use. It’s a question of how we want to implement that and the staff resources to do it,” Duncan said.

County CAO Scott Wilson is concerned.

“We don’t need a motion to follow this. You know, I’ve heard the council say it, I think twice now on Instagram. And it’s an internal question that we have to deal with. . And I’m concerned about liability. . I’m concerned about the content. I’m concerned about the reputation of the council, if the content doesn’t reflect the council,” Wilson said.

County staff will investigate the risk.
