Black Friday shopping for TVs, furniture? don't forget the advice kit

That new TV, cabinet or appliance you’re looking to get on Black Friday or Cyber Monday can bring unexpected dangers to your home.

So don’t forget to buy a wall-hanging kit and keep it out of the reach of small children, the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) urges.

“With the holiday shopping season upon us, it’s important to secure your new TV or furniture to the wall to prevent further incidents,” said CPSC Chairman Alex Hoehn-Saric.

“Whether a TV or a piece of furniture comes without an anti-tip-over kit, you can order it online or buy it at your local hardware store for $20 or less,” he told the news commission.

Since 2000, 581 people have died from furniture, TV or electrical tips in the United States. Of those, 472 involved children.

Just last month, the CPSC approved a mandatory safety standard for dressers, chests and other storage units. This ensures that they meet the new stability requirements designed to prevent furniture from tipping over.

Until sustainable furniture hits the market, the CPSC said consumers should stick with their furniture.

You can fix the wall after removing the furniture anchor if you are renovating or moving, the commission noted.

If anchoring is not an option, it is recommended to place the TVs on a strong, low base and push them as far back as possible.

Avoid displaying or storing items, such as toys and remotes, in places where children may be tempted to climb to reach them, the CPSC advised.

Finally, consider recycling old TVs you don’t use, the commission suggested.
