Google is making several changes and improvements to its Android/Google TV platform that will see its impact on smart TVs from next year onwards. Android TV has always felt like a neglected cousin, with brands introducing new products but not interested in focusing on existing models with new updates that could keep them safe.
But all that could change, Google made more changes at the code level, allowing people to keep more apps without worrying about their TVs slowing down. As you know, Google has used the Android Package Kit (APKs) for mobile phones and TVs, but that may change with the launch of the Android App Bundle (AAB) in 2023.
Google understands that, unlike smartphones, smart TVs in most cases come with 8GB of storage which can force people to remove certain applications before installing a new one. To solve this problem, Google introduced App Bundles in November 2020, and for three years to come, it will be the standard for TV manufacturers.
This development has been confirmed by Google this week, and the good thing is that the change will work on both new and existing TV models that work on the Android TV platform. Google is giving app developers six months notice to redesign their apps to make them lighter. That being said, Google believes that the transition from APK to AAB can be done by engineers in three days.
The company warns that any apps that don’t meet the new standards will be hidden from the TV interface. In layman’s terms, all these changes can help smart TVs run longer, faster and guaranteed updates keep them safe from possible attacks.
Google has spoken about its need to update the TV platform but now it is up to developers and TV brands to implement this in their products and offer them to existing users as well.
