Gurugram: MP Rao Indrajit Singh has written to Union Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari, pushing for the construction of an elevated road between Hero Honda Chowk and Umang Bharadwaj Chowkmonths later GMDA rejected the proposal and asked NHAI to go ahead with the road widening plan.
The renovation work of this 2.2 km route has been pending for years. The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) is yet to start widening the road from two to six lanes as the land required for the construction work is yet to be provided. The project — which includes road widening work and a flyover at Umang Bharadwaj Chowk — is already set to miss the November 2023 deadline.
Shifting to the elevated road will also cost Rs 100 crore, an NHAI official said on Friday. Singh, the Gurugram MP and Union Minister, had brought the first elevated road proposal in June, citing the demands of RWAs and industry associations. The plan received an “in-principle nod” from the chief minister, who recommended it be tested further.
In September, TOI had reported that NHAI officials had been told by the Gurugram Metropolitan Development Authority (GMDA) not to go ahead with the elevated road and go back to the initial renovation project. In his letter to Gadkari on Friday, the MP made another argument for the elevated road, saying it was the “only” permanent solution to decongest the road between the two intersections.
Singh also said that NHAI and GMDA had recently visited the area and supported the elevated road plan. “Officials of both agencies were of the opinion that the existing road widening project would not solve the problem of this widespread traffic jam. During the visit, residents and people from various associations demanded elevated roads and submitted letters in this regard,” read Indrajit’s letter.
When asked, an official familiar with the project told TOI that the existing proposal for reconstruction of the stretch also includes construction of a flyover at Umang Bharadwaj Chowk and Hero Honda Chowk already has an underpass there.
“The amount of elevated road construction can be used for other infrastructure works that will benefit the city,” the official said.
The project is part of a larger plan to decongest Hero Honda Chowk Dwarka Expressway. Thousands of commuters take the road between the two intersections to reach Sectors 9, 10 and 37. It is also an important link to NH-8 from Rohtak and Jhajjar via Basai Road. Apart from that, residents of Old Gurugram use it to reach the Delhi-Gurugram Expressway.
