A new mobile tech competitor on the Australian scene, US company Orbic has launched two new 4G-enabled tablet devices just in time for Christmas.
Orbic has entered the Australian market with the $149 entry-level Tab8 4G and more rugged Tab10R 4G tablets. As one of the largest technology suppliers to US telecommunications company Verizon, Orbic is known for its phones, tablets and data points, among other mobile connected technologies.
Aimed at consumers looking for an affordable media consumption device, the Tab8 4G features an 8-inch HD TFT display with a resolution of 1200 x 800. As well as shipping as a Telstra prepaid device that supports mobile data, it also includes Wi-Fi and Bluetooth compatibility so you can stream content while wearing a wireless headset.
Internally, the Orbic Tab8 4G packs a 4,300mAh battery and is powered by an octa-core Qualcomm SD 680 chip. It is supported by 3GB of RAM and 32GB of internal storage, expandable up to 1TB. Interestingly, the tablet ships with the previous Android 12 operating system, but it supports an upgrade to the current Android 13 OS and two years of continuous security updates.
Meanwhile, its more powerful counterpart, the Tab10R 4G, is a 10.1-inch tablet with a 1,280 x 800 QXVGA display and a larger 6,000 mAh battery. Its internals are also slightly more powerful, with 4GB of RAM and 64GB of internal storage. Built to withstand more wear and tear, the Tab10R 4G has an IP65 water resistance rating – up from the Tab8’s IP54 rating – and MIL 810 certification, meaning it meets the military standard for shock and drop resistance. Both tablets have front and rear cameras that allow you to take video calls and take pictures.
One of the big ways Orbic is bringing the Tab10R tablet to Australia is through a partnership with Smartmatic, which will see the devices installed in the upcoming Australian elections. One of the useful aspects here will undoubtedly be the larger tablet’s stylus, which magnetically attaches to the device.
Expect to see the entry-level Orbic Tab8 4G in Telstra stores from November 29 for an affordable Telstra prepaid price of $149. The Tab10R 4G will be available in December at Mobileciti and Leader Computer Group for $429.
Given Orbic’s significant presence in the US, the tablets are just the start of the brand’s Australian expedition. As an indication, their local website lists phones and wearables as “coming soon,” along with hotspots and routers.
Tablets are a competitive space, with Oppo recently entering the fray with the Pad Air, so the market is heating up. Priced at $149, the Tab8 4G is an attractive device for kids and older users who don’t need fast specs, just a solid device to enjoy media.
