Several young people in Waterloo, Ont. On Tuesday, the police officers were taken to the hospital after taking the drug in the form of pills.
The Waterloo Regional Police Service (WRPS) said at around 2:30 p.m., they were called to a report of a seven-year-old child who was sleepy and had difficulty breathing in the area of University Avenue and Fisher Hallman Road.
“Investigators believe the youth took a yellow or white pill with the word ‘Xanax’ on the pill,” said Const. Melissa Quarry told CTV Thursday that the pill was rectangular in shape. “It is unknown at this time what the pills contained and investigators are working to determine who provided them.”
As of 5:00 p.m. Wednesday, the youths are still in the hospital.
“The youth’s current condition is not believed to be life-threatening,” Quarry said.
WRPS urges carers to talk to their children about drug use and warns those with tablets not to use them.
“Investigators will continue to speak with any witnesses, parents of students, anyone with information about this incident to determine where these pills came from and who gave them,” Quarry said.
HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS PARTICIPATED
On Thursday morning, the Waterloo Catholic District School Board (WCDSB) confirmed to CTV News that students from Resurrection Catholic High School were involved.
“Honestly, I was shocked,” said Quincy Patterson, a student at Resurrection. “There’s a lot of drugs around this area and KW, I didn’t think it would get this bad.”
In a letter sent to parents at the school and obtained by CTV News, the WCDSB said the incident happened off school property, but police, paramedics and fire were still at the school Wednesday.
“I saw it everywhere after it came out. We got an email about it, and an announcement on PA, notifications on social media – everything. So it’s a big deal,” said student Everett Sollazzo.
The board said the administration team has been in contact with WRPS regarding the investigation. Social workers are involved in supporting all students and staff who need support, the board said.
“Yesterday’s incident was certainly very serious, but we believe that Resurrection High School is and will continue to be a safe and secure place to learn and work. “We are grateful for the support of EMS and are grateful that all students are doing well,” the letter to parents said.
WCDSB and WRPS did not confirm how many students were involved in Resurrection.
Student Abi Biniam said, “These situations can be prevented if people just say no.”
