Delhi Police is checking the water bill of Aftab Poonawala, the man accused of murdering his girlfriend Shraddha Walker and cutting her body into 35 pieces. The Mumbai resident will be produced in court today. He has been making strange claims about the crime — which police say — may be a ploy to mislead them. According to police sources, Aftab did not pay his water bill of Rs 300.

This small detail is significant as the Delhi government provides 20,000 liters of free water per household every month. It seems unusual for a person to use so much water.

Other flats in the building had zero bills in the last few months.

Aftab may have used water to wipe the blood from the floor, police said. They also learned that Aftab often went to the balcony to check the building’s water tanker.

Aftab disposed of the body parts across Delhi over a period of two months.

She told the police that she used to see Shraddha’s head every day and put makeup on it.

He also told the police that the couple had quarreled over who would go to Mumbai to fetch their luggage. Before moving to Delhi, they backpacked in Uttarakhand and Himachal Pradesh and ran out of money.

They also quarreled over the rent of the Mehrauli apartment.

He said they broke up and were living together until one of them got a job. Both quit their jobs when they left Mumbai.

The couple worked in a call center.

Poonawala was fired from the Gurgaon call center around the same time for being erratic at work.

They met through Bumble in 2019 and fell in love. The woman’s father was against the relationship and did not speak to her for months.

Shraddha’s friend alerted the family about her non-contact information after which they filed a missing person’s complaint. Poonawala has been called several times by the police for questioning. However, after meeting the woman’s father, he confessed to the crime.
