Diabetes According to the report, it was more in men than in women. - The main reason behind the massive increase in diabetes patients is an unhealthy lifestyle, which includes lack of physical activity, excessive consumption of fast food, etc.
- The study suggests that
Covid-19 It is capable of directly damaging the pancreas which can worsen sugar levels in known diabetics.
Although the disease is widespread, according to a report by Tata 1mg Labs, its incidence is highest among people aged 40-60 years.
About 42% of the total sample with positive tests were over 60 years of age with diabetes. The incidence drops to 12.5% in 25-40 year olds.
“Diabetes is a leading threat to public health worldwide, and the outlook is even worse for countries like India, where the burden of diabetes has increased significantly in recent decades and will continue to increase in the coming decades,” said Dr. Prashant Nag, Clinical Head, Tata 1mg Labs.
A total of 536,164 blood samples were tested for diabetes at Tata 1mg labs across the country between March-October 2022. Of this sample, approximately 33% were diagnosed as positive for the disease
“As the prevalence of diabetes increases, more young adults and adolescents are prone to developing diabetes, especially if they are overweight/obese,” says Dr. Nag.
Men have more diabetes than women
According to the report, the prevalence of diabetes is higher in men than in women. Of the tested sample, 58% were male, while 42% were female.
Screening was done with an HbA1c test (or glycosylated hemoglobin test) which tells about average blood sugar levels over the past two to three months. A HbA1c level value ≥ 6.5% is considered indicative of diabetes.
“Not only that, more people are now suffering from borderline diabetes. It is a condition where the blood sugar level is slightly above the normal range, but cannot be called diabetes. A report published in 2018 estimated that one in six Indians has borderline diabetes,” added Dr Nag.
The main reason behind the massive increase in diabetes patients is an unhealthy lifestyle, which includes lack of physical activity, excessive fast food consumption, smoking and alcohol consumption.
There is no special diet for diabetes; The whole idea is to nourish the body by consuming different nutrients in the right proportion and at the right time. Attention should be paid to eating plenty of seasonal colorful vegetables, healthy fats and adequate protein sources. For carbohydrates, choose a variety of whole grains,” says Chhavi Kohli, chief diabetes educator and nutritionist at Medanta The Medicine, Gurgaon.
He further added, “Don’t miss fruits, use them as snacks and avoid packaged and processed foods. Also, there are a lot of myths surrounding the right diet for diabetes. Don’t fall prey to misinformation. Always consult a certified nutritionist and diabetes educator for your diabetes.”
New research also suggests that Covid-19 is also capable of directly damaging the pancreas, which can worsen sugar levels in known diabetics. It can even trigger the onset of diabetes in non-diabetics, explains Dr. Nag.
Diabetes is a curable disease and can only be managed through a balanced and healthy diet, an active lifestyle, taking prescribed medicines on time, regular health checkups and scheduled doctor visits.
