SINGAPORE: A man lured several girls on Instagram to his home with offers of money or work, but when they arrived, he abused them with toys.
The 47-year-old pleaded guilty on Thursday (1 December) to four charges including attempted rape, indecent exposure of a minor and grooming a minor. The other six suspects will be considered for sentencing.
He cannot be named temporarily, while the court investigates whether he should be named to identify his victims.
The court heard that the offender started sending random messages to many girls on Instagram from 2020. He asked them if they needed money or a part-time job, and encouraged them to go to his apartment, intending to have sex with them.
Four girls between the ages of 13 and 17 responded to the man’s Instagram messages and went to his father. He sexually assaulted three of these girls, and the fourth was forced to leave.
The court heard that the offender sent messages to the first person on Instagram in August 2020, when the girl was 13 years old. He asks her if she needs money, and she says yes.
The girl had just run away from a welfare home for teenage girls, where she was placed after being arrested for theft, and was found in need by social services.
The man told the girl that he would pay her S$200 to go to his house and let him touch her body, and she agreed.
On August 21, 2020, the man requested a ride to pick up the girl at his home. When he entered, he saw an iPad and four S$50 bills on the table.
The criminal then abused her with a toy. He later paid the girl S$200, asked her to delete her Instagram profile and told her not to tell anyone what happened.
After this, the man continued to send messages to the victim asking him to meet again, but he did not respond or said no.
The girl agrees to meet again
However, in February 2021, the girl will need money for her daily needs. He decided to accept the criminal’s request for money and arranged to meet him.
She went to her home again on February 23, 2021. The man assaulted the girl again.
The second victim was a 15-year-old when the perpetrator messaged her on Instagram in August 2020. He offered her a job for S$200, saying it included a hug and a sit-down. to be his friend for two hours.
At first the man didn’t touch the man, but he kept sending him messages. Finally, the girl replied to him in September 2020 because she needed money.
On September 28, 2020, the girl took a Grab car to the home of the criminal, who paid for it.
The man then abused the girl with his toy.
THE MAN WENT
The third victim was 14 when the perpetrator messaged her on Instagram in December 2020, asking if she was interested in a part-time job. She seems to be offering jobs, including waitressing and kitchen work.
He told her that the high-stakes operation was a “criminal act” in which the offender touches the victim’s body in exchange for $200.
He continued to send messages to the girl between December 20, 2020 and January 5, 2021, to persuade her to accept his offer.
The girl told him that she was 14 years old and that she was still interested in the job of guarding, but the man kept trying to push her to meet him. In the messages shown in the court documents, the girl often said to the criminal that he was not, saying that he was not right because he was a teenager. He added: “I don’t say; it seems strange”.
Finally on January 5, 2021, the victim agreed to meet. He went to the place of the criminal and saw the money on the table. He told her she would make $200 if she stayed for two hours.
But when he put his hand on the victim’s waist, tthe girl said she wanted to leave. Even though the perpetrator kept trying to get her to stop, the girl insisted on going.
During the next three days, the criminal repeatedly asked the girl to return to her father, but she refused.
He was arrested on March 1, 2021, but no word on the extent of his crimes was found in court documents or in open court.
Prosecutors are seeking between 13 and 16 years of imprisonment and 13 strokes of the cane for the suspect, who is said to have used social media to prey on girls.
THE JUDGE ASKED THE JUDGE TO EXERCISE HIS DISCRETION
Although the man was defended by lawyer Favian Kang, he asked to speak directly to the court to request a gag order on his identity.
The suspect said: “Me and my ex-wife, we feel that this affair is not about me. For me, because I will finish my sentence, I will be gone for a long time. It does not matter.”
However, he said that anyone can easily go to Instagram and reduce the number of victims on his account.
She added that her son went to a psychiatrist after his arrest.
“This boy is very precious to me, he is very close to me. Wherever we go, we are always together. My concern is that if my identity is revealed, he will be the only face. to the world,” said the criminal.
He asked the judge to consider extending the gag order to his identity, as gag orders are in place to protect the victim, the innocent and the helpless.
Deputy Prosecutor Edwin Soh disagreed, saying that gag orders only affect the interests of the deceased, not the interests of the accused.
“Although we love it, the boy is not the victim,” he said.
Judge Pang Khang Chau first said that the circumstances of the accused’s family members were not something he was entitled to take into account when it came to a partial order.
However, the accused continued to argue about how a reasonable person could identify the victims if they knew his identity and Instagram handle.
Judge Pang finally said to the accused: “I don’t think you are right about this, but I have a duty to investigate this fully.
He adjourned the case for further information. The punishment will be fixed for a day later.
