Needham, Mass.–(BUSINESS WIRE)–The outlook for PCs and tablets continues to bleak, according to a new forecast from the International Data Corporation (IDC). Worldwide PC and tablet shipments are expected to decline by 11.9% to 456.8 million units in 2022, and then further decline in 2023. According to the IDC Worldwide Quarterly Personal Computing Device Tracker, shipments of traditional PCs will decline by 5.16% in 2022. million units in 2023, and tablets will decrease by 6.7% to 148 million units.
Despite the sharp decline, shipments remain above pre-pandemic levels, but the market will continue to struggle with macroeconomic headwinds, excess channel inventory and high levels of saturation. The PC market is expected to outperform tablets with a CAGR of just over 1% over the five-year forecast, while tablets are expected to have a CAGR of -1.7% over the same period.
“In fact, PC and tablet manufacturers are struggling in the coming months as average selling prices are expected to decline as volumes are expected to decline,” said Jitesh Ubrani, IDC research manager for mobility and consumer device tracking. “In the near term, excess inventory is forcing OEMs and channels to significantly discount products, and if the economic downturn continues, the product mix will also shift from the premium segment to the mid-range.”
The current macroeconomic headwinds are affecting all market segments, but consumers are being hit the hardest. IDC has cut its 2023 forecast for the consumer, education and commercial markets, but we expect a strong refresh cycle in commercial PCs through 2024.
“Going forward, the timing of the macroeconomic recovery is likely to be consistent with other strong market drivers,” said Lynn Huang, vice president of Devices and Displays at IDC. “The Windows 11 migration, along with the next major education and home upgrade cycles, should drive growth from 2024 to the forecast outer years.”
