NEW DELHI: Intensifying the protest against the National Medical Commission (NMC) Bill, the resident doctors of All India Institute of Medical Sciences, Safdarjung Hospital, Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital, GTB Hospital and Lady Hardinge Medical College have decided to close their OPD services on Thursday. The NMC Bill, expected to be tabled in the Rajya Sabha on Thursday, seeks to replace the defunct Medical Council of India (MCI). The Bill also proposes a common last-year MBBS exam, known as the National Exit Test (NEXT), for admission to postgraduate medical courses and to obtain a license to practice medicine.
On Wednesday, the Indian Medical Association (IMA) had called for a nationwide strike in which most Delhi-based hospitals did not participate, saying they would protest the next day. “Withdrawal of Resident Doctors from all hospital services from 8 pm on August 1, 2019 if our demands to amend certain provisions of the NMC Bill are not met and the bill is presented in the present form,” said a statement issued by RDA AIIMS. .
“A gross violation of medical ethics and utter contempt for the noble profession in the form of NMC Bill has been passed in Lok Sabha. RDA GTBH and UCMS in solidarity with FORDA and the entire medical fraternity announce the withdrawal of all services not essential since 8.am,” said a statement from GTB Hospital.
Safdarjung Hospital RDA said that the doctors will not participate in any kind of services, including emergency services, and will go on an indefinite strike if the demands are not met. This is the second major protest by doctors in just two months. In early June, doctors went on strike against the attack on a doctor at Kolkata’s NRS Hospital.
